Procedure for draining an automatic transmission
How to easily drain a ZF automatic transmission
How to drain a ZF automatic transmission in video:
Oil change procedure - upgrading a ZF automatic gearbox
1) Drive to operating temperature
2) Place the car on a lift or chock it with the drive wheels hanging down
3) Put the gearbox in position P and apply the handbrake
4) Stop the engine
5) Unscrew the drain screw and collect the oil in a container that will allow you to approximately measure the quantity of oil drained.
6) Remove the oil pan (if plastic filter pan go to No. 9)
7) Remove the oil filter
8) Fit the new filter with its new seal
9) Fit the casing (tighten crosswise to avoid deformation)
10) Replace the drain screw
11) Unscrew the filling screw
12) Fill with the required automatic transmission oil until the hole overflows.
13) Start the engine
14) Refill with automatic transmission oil until it overflows from the hole
15) Tighten the filling screw
16) Stop the engine
17) A second person starts the engine
18) Let the engine idle
19) Select R and D then shift through all the gears, staying in each for 10 seconds, select the snow program (all this to bleed the entire hydraulic circuit of the transmission)
20) Keep the engine at 2000 rpm for 30s (to fill the torque converter properly)
21) Select P
22) Open the filler opening
23) Check that the oil temperature is between 30° and 40°
24) If the oil does not overflow: add more until it overflows. If it overflows: let it drain.
25) Let it idle until the oil reaches 40°. Never exceed 50°.
26) Wait until just a few isolated drops fall from the filling hole
27) Close the filler/level cap. Never open the filler with the engine stopped as oil will leak out.

Important:
Some automatic gearboxes, notably the 6HP28 and most 8-speeds, are equipped with a thermostatic valve.
For these models, you must do a road test so that the gearbox reaches at least 75° to open the valve.
After the test, cool the gearbox and repeat the level check at a temperature of 30-40° maximum.
Never add additives to the oil or it will cause damage.
Never clean with solvents or other cleaners
